Does anyone have experience with coupling the TC1.4E with a Nikkor 50mm 1.8D? Using a D90 to take some concert/nightclub shots and thought the combo would make a good, reasonably fast short tele.

Correct me if wrong, but there isn't a TC for AF-D screw type lenses.

The Nikon TC-14E II Teleconverter has been updated to match with AF-S type lenses, and will maintain full metering and focusing with compatible cameras and lenses. This converter will increase the focal length of the lens by 1.4x, and reduces the lens aperture by one f/stop.

Note! Autofocusing only possible when used with D1, D1X, D1H, D100, F5, F100, N90s, N80, N75, N65 AF SLR cameras, or any newer models.

• Compatibility
Due to the high-quality design of this converter (5 elements/5 groups), the teleconverter will only fit and work with a select range of lenses. Only the following lenses are compatible:

* AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF VR
* AF-S 80-200mm f/2.8D ED-IF
* AF-S 200-400mm f/4G ED-IF VR
* AF-S 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF VR (no AF)
* AF-S 200mm f/2G ED-IF VR (no AF)
* AF-S 300mm f/2.8D ED-IF (II)
* AF-S 300mm f/2.8G ED-IF VR
* AF-S 300mm f/4D ED-IF
* AF-S 400mm f/2.8D ED-IF (II)
* AF-S 400mm f/2.8G ED VR
* AF-S 500mm f/4D ED-IF (II)*
* AF-S 500mm f/4G ED VR
* AF-S 600mm f/4D ED-IF (II)*
* AF-S 600mm f/4G ED VR

(*) Note: Only limited AF possible with AF-S 500mm f/4D ED-IF (II) and AF-S 600mm f/4D ED-IF (II).

It is possible to utilize the current set of TC's, 14/17/20, with non-AFS lenses via This Modification.

The problem with these TC's and some of the non-AFS lenses is that the rear element of the lens may move rearward, which will then contact the protruding front element of the TC causing damage to the lens, the TC or both. The 3rd party TC's, Sigma and Kenko for example, do not have a protruding front element, but in some cases they will not correctly report the multiplied focal length to the EXIF, but all the metering and lens functions work as expected.

Nikon says this list of lenses are compatible with their TC1.4E II.

http://www.nikonusa.com/en_INC/IMG/...converter-Compatibility/en_US_Comp_chart.html

Note the top header in Bold says:

The rear elements of NIKKOR lenses not listed can contact and damage the Teleconverter element and must not be attached.

Here is the manual - it says the same thing:
http://www.nikonusa.com/pdf/manuals/lenses/AF/TC-14EII-17EII-20EIII.pdf

This may not be the case of other brands of TC, but the Nikon brand is made for longer lenses... the ones specified.
