The cable that came with the camera is intended primarily for occasionally transfering images from the camera to another device, such as a computer. And although it will work for tethering purposes as well, it also presents a greater risk of damaging the USB port to PCB connection inside the camera. The reason being, it's a straight cable which extends outward and thus pulls down on the USB port with greater leverage than a 90 degree cable, such as the one I linked to. And according to Nikon service this has been known to cause damage to the internal PCB connection. The result being the port no longer works. Hence, NPS also suggests using a 90 degree cable for tethering purposes.
