Thanks so much, guys! Because of your comments, I did some research. This may actually be an American Hover Fly which looks and acts like a bee but does not sting. That would explain why it's not familiar.

This looks more like a species of bee to me based on the color of the eyes. American Hoverflies that I've seen have red eyes and this one has the grayish eyes that I often see on sweat bees.

I wouldn't rule out wasp either btw....then again, I'm not great at id'ing bee's so who knows.

Thanks for the info, Nate. I'll see if I have another pic with the eyes showing more. (I still can't get those great close-ups you post!) They are definitely different from the bees in my yard and they are very nonagressive.
