    Which is the better lens

    the Nikon 18-70

    Nikon 24-85

    SIgma 24-70 f2.8

    tamron 28-75 f2.8

    Need some help deciding.

"Better" to what end? An 18-70 lens probably sees different use than a 24-70 or 28-75.

As an all-round lens, the 18-70 is hard to beat, in particular at its low price.

looking for sharpness and a good walk around lens
  4. tthen I think Bjorn hit it. The 18-70 is tough to beat.
  5. I vote the 28-75. Certainly a sharp lens.

The copy of the 18-70 I had refused to focus reliably, even after I had Nikon look at it.

I have used the Tamron a fair bit and for a light but fast lens, I think it is pretty amazing for what it costs.

Magical rendering stuff like bokeh are a little blah, but otherwise it is fine.

My walking around lens is the 28-70 AFS 2.8
    backed up with the 17-35

Takes care of 75% of my random shoots.

I like my 18-70. I sold the one that came with my D70 because I'm mostly a telephoto shooter, missed it, and bought another.
