The heather is in full bloom here in the SW of the UK. Hillsides turn to purple, mixed amongst the heather is gorse with it's brilliant yellow flower.

Oh the summertime is coming and the trees are sweetly blooming
And the wild mountain thyme grows around the blooming heather

Will ye go lassie go, and we'll all go together
To pluck wild mountain thyme all around the blooming heather
    Will ye go lassie go
  2. So that is what Heather looks like. There have been songs written about it and poems as well. Pretty image.

The heather grows wild, and provides opportunities for honey bees!
The shots are straight from the camera, handheld, which was probably a mistake as the wind was in the region of 15 knots, hence the slight movement on the closer plants.

As I said earlier, the Scottish mountains are covered this time of year. The Grouse season started on the 12th, the young birds feed on heather shoots in the early spring. You may have heard of Grouse whisky. The bird on the label is a grouse, consequently when ordering one you request a low flyer.

Thanks for the memories - as a young man I camped down there in Cornwall and I well remember the smell of the heather. It's one of nature's more generous weeds. That's a wonderful part of the world to live in and can be compared with anywhere.
  8. Thanks for the fill in on this beautiful plant.
