When I find myself overthinking modern equipment, the best thing to do is realize that what matters in a photograph is Light, Subject, Composition and then the other stuff....

Thanks Nick,

That one was from March 2012. I was going through pictures in Lightroom and adding them to collections for Lightroom CC when I found this one. It was with a 12 MP camera and I have been fighting GAAS lately where I was thinking I needed a Z7 :)

I’ve had my D300 since the first month they were released. And I still use it. The metering is so much more accurate compared to my D 800. That might be my settings, but everything is default, so out of the box it’s better.

I purchased a D300 to replace my D70s and paired it with a 70-300 VR which I found to be a very good combination for my affordability. I still use the D300 often and it’s paired now with the 200-500 VR 5.6.

Excellent image. While I have moved to the affordable 7100 and 7200, I still use my last 300 for action in good light, and when faster focus is needed. A D300 will make a great, and inexpensive camera for someone starting out.

I recently mentioned in another post that for shooting wildlife the D300 is still the standard by which I compare other bodies. Don't get me wrong, I've owned and shot tens of thousands of frames through D71/7200, D500, and all of the 800 series (in DX mode) and they all produce superior IQ. It's more sentimental than logical. When I used it I was thrilled to death with the 300 and captured some awesome shots with it. So whenever I find myself wishing a newer body had faster frame rate, better AF, etc, I remind myself how happy I was back then. And sometimes it works.... :)

If if does everything you want, that is all it needs to do.
For my general shooting, I would still be using my old D70S, if it had not died on me.
For high school sports, its ONLY failure is a dismally low max ISO of 1600, because of the LOW light night and gym sports.

I bought the D300 as an upgrade to the D70 and really enjoyed it while I had it. As is normal for me, I became enamored of a newer camera and bought a D7100 then eventually traded the D300 away.

As I recall, it was very comforable to use and delivered many very nice images.

Still shooting my D700 and D3S. 12 MP are good enough for what I shoot...

And, I've bought a F4S. Yes, film... To bring me down to Earth. That means to me "Think before you shoot".

Kind regards
Klaus

This is such a keeper! I might like it even better in monochrome; I'd have to see it to be certain.

Your wish is my command!
I photograph on a budget and have had my D300 since it arrived in the UK in July 2006. Still does all I ask of it.

The D300 was one Nikon’s most successful DSLR bodies - they made and sold 80,000 units/month during its first year of production in 2007 - that’s 1,000,000 in sales for a high-end model. Not too shabby. I’m using my third body. (D300s)
