The Mud Volcanoes - Romania

The Mud Volcanoes in Romania are a quaint little protected area in a beautiful central region of the country, at the joint of several small tectonic plates. They are active (they keep bubbling every few seconds or minutes), but they are basically pushing warm mud and some harmless gases (unless you smoke around them, then the joke is on you).

Very interesting visit. My kids absolutely loved it.

And it was a good opportunity to show my 14-24 some much deserved and long overdue attention and love

Maximum entrance fee (for adults) is less than 1 EUR.

Hi Bogdan,

an impressive region. I like your images, but I think they could use some more work on them. I'd enhance the contrast as well as clarity (or microcontrast). Ans the ones with sky in it could do with a graduated ND filter. I'm sure your pictures would look even more stunning than they already do.

Frankly speaking, I am not really happy with these images. The midday sun was really harsh, casting very ugly shadows. I edited the NEF's carefully, including darks/shadows pulling, vibrance, GND for the sky, sharpness... (you should see the originals hahaha!).

But the light was really at its suckiest (unfortunately it was the only feasible time to drag my family to the spot) and even with the best processing, the fresh grey mud doesn't look too flattering in strong, open sun

Amazingly though, I was able to nicely pull most shadows from my family's portraits and they look excellent!. The D800 has an amazing dynamic range.

But you're right, on some of these I could do better. I am just an amateur
