The Small Ones

Our smallest dragonflies are the Sympetrum species. In late Summer there are plenty of them at different places. They are very territorial. I've seen them even go after an Anax Imperator to scare him away. When you get close to them they fly up hovering in front of you. If they don't like you they find another stick but they often returns to the same stick.


The smallest is the Sympetrum danae.

Males. They turn from yellow to black.

Thanks Gary. Forgot to add that I used the 300mm f/4 AF-S. Some of them with a Kenko tube. Pbase is running slow again I see.

S. sanquineum
S. flaveolum
S. fonscolombii (rare)
S. striolatum
S. vulgatum

Manitoba has 7, two of which S. vicinum and S.semicinctum, are rare, but appear to be increasing, perhaps due to climate warming. Others are S. danae, S.internum, S.obtrusum (most common), S. costiferum and S. corruptum (most beautiful)
