Love my current set up D300, 14mm, 17-55, 60af-s, 85, 80-200 sb800, back up D2x. Just ordered on Thursday 70-200VRII and TC 20III, but returning sb900.
My latest order made me rethink ALL my photo equipment. Often I need 6400iso and the D700 is great. I've used the D300 to 3200iso its acceptable.

Reading post after post, the D700 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 and new TC20 III is the best set up
I want to use my D300 with the (above lens list) and 60af-s, 85 1.4. need to slim down lenses and add a wide zoom.
As a back up for years not used very much. 28-70af-s 2.8 old 20mm af 2.8, and a older 28-85mm af 3.5. and 75-300 af 4.5 all metal.
Never have a needed any of this backup list. My first line up has not let me down.

I shoot Weddings Events, some commercial, Nascar once a year, and a Mrs. Pageant. The DX 1.5 has worked in my favor.

Will using the 14-24 and 24-70 on the d300 screw up my flow until the NEXT D700s/D700x/D800/D900? comes out? 17-55 on a DX is great
I've used every bit of the zoom rarely do I take a step closer or back to fill the frame.

I used my 12-24 and 24-70 on my D300 for a while before upgrading to the D3 and replacing the 12-24 with the 17-35. You'll find the range is fine - you still have wide enough for the group shots, and the 24-70 is an ideal range for a wedding lens on a DX body.

If you are worried about the loss of focal length with the D700, buy the tc-14e and use that with the 70-200. You hardly notice the IQ difference and you will be back at the same FL that you had with the D300/70-200.
