Thinking about the D700, question on an old lens

I've had fun with my D200 for quite some time. Still less than 2000 clicks though. But the added iso range and full frame of the D700 sure are tempting. Maybe that's why I have used the D200 so little.

Question: I have an old Tamron 28-70 f2.8 that I got with my Nikon FE film camera back in the early to mid '80's. It came with something called an "Adaptall" mount. Does anyone have any idea if this lens could still be used in manual mode with either the D200 or the D 700?

Do you D700 have good results with the 18-200 VR DX f3.5 that was so lauded in the early D200 days. Is that still worth keeping for the D700. I also have the 50mm f1.8 and the 24-70 kit lens for the D200. I like the fact that the D700 uses the same battery and can use the same CF cards. But what about the D200 grip and the SB-800 flash? Oh so may questions.

TIA

The Tamron lens with the adaptall will technically fit on your D700, but there will be no metering information, and yes, you would have to shoot in manual mode only. As for the 18-200, that is a DX lens which will work on the D700 in DX mode, but that will bring your megapixels down to 5.1. Ditch the 18-200 and get a lens that will work on both cameras. The grip for the 200 will not fit on the D700. The D700 shares the same battery grip as the D300. As for the flash, you have no problems using it on the D700.

Nonsense ! The old Tamron Adaptall 2 lenses with a Nikon AI mount WILL meter on a D700 and also a D200 because both cameras have the AI tab. You WILL get metering and you'll also get A and M modes.

The SB800 will work fine with the D700.

That is great news about the lens. I thought that it would, but not being very proficient in photography yet, I needed to ask. That f2.8 seems desirable. I'll keep the 18-200 on the D200 and maybe get a "beast" for the D700 when that time actually comes. Thanks loads.

Thanks. Do you know if the D700 is about the same size physically as the D200?

It's slightly bigger since it has a bigger prism housing. Otherwise very similar in size.

You can also program the D200/D700 with the Tamron's maximum aperture value to get Matrix metering.
