Thoughts: 300mm 2.8 + 1.4/1.7 or Sigma 500 4.5?

Hmm.. been mulling this over the last few months as I search hard for a used Sigma 500 4.5 HSM. Have a few bites that might work (please?!?! :)  ) - but would like to ask your thoughts on perhaps going with a 300 f2.8 + 1.7 and 1.4 TC instead.

I would mainly use this setup for bird photography and it would replace my wonderful 200-500 Tamron. I like the idea of have a 300 for other uses and the 300 2.8 is certainly more available than the Sigma 500... just trying to determine how best to go. I assume the 300 with TC's or the Sigma 500 will be a better setup than my 200-500?

Thx for your thoughts and ideas....

I'm in the same boat as Pesto126 and would be intersted in what the community has to offer. As part of this discussion, any feedback on the AF-I version of this lens? They seem to come up for half the price of an AF-S.

The 300 AF-I is a great lens and a real bargain. It actually has more ED elements than the newer AF-S and VR versions. I used mine with the tc-17 all the time and it worked great. That said, if you are really interested in 500mm you are better off with the prime.
