i think the soft faces was a result of resizing. Looking at the original in Aperture the faces look much sharper.
However, I quickly noticed that the 70-200VR has a surprisingly narrow DOF at f/2.8. It will sneak up on you if you aren't careful.

If you guys were shooting these kind of setting, what aperture would you try to use with the 70-200VR?

How about aperture? What f-stop would you guys recommend with the 70-200 when doing portraits of groups of people, 3-4? Would this answer change much if they were in two rows rather than standing next to eachother?

i tried doing that, but it is always so hard to tell in the LCD from the sunlight... ill probably go out today and see what I can do.

This loupe will solve the LCD washout in the sun completely!

Highly recommend. It hangs around your neck (weighs next to nothing). Hold it up to the LCD - exact size for D2X./S, D200. Blocks all sun, you get a highly detailed image from your LCD in full sun!!! Wife and I each shoot carrying this 100% of the time.
