Well, 2 more days of vacation then back to work this weekend. I really got to learn this camera so I am really happy I took some time off. These Piping Plovers were shot this morning at my town beach.

D2x, 500mmm AF-S, x1.4, ISO 200, Gitzo 1548, Wimberley Head.
Used Incident Meter for exposure, Comp (Ev) -1/3 to -2/3 for whites, iTTL fill flash added

Also here are my settings for AF;

AF-C, Single Area AF
a1 - FPS rate + AF
a4 - Lock On = On (have tried both OFF is preferable and faster!)

George,

Nice pics. I'm still amazed at how sharp your shots are at 700mm. 8)

I am still shooting with the H, but I'm also still trying to settle on these same settings. I keep going back and forth on both the AF-C mode (shooting with Single Area AF most of the time), and the a4 setting. Like you, I've tried it both ways and still can't decide.

I don't have any issues one way or the other for stationary birds (of course I shooting with the 300 2.8 + 1.4 of 1.7 TC, not the 500 f4), but for flying birdies I'm having a hard time picking and sticking to a particular set-up.

Thanks for posting these details. It's nice to know that others are still feeling their way around these settings. ;-)

Regards,

Frank

No problem Frank! I am very interested in what others are doing as well!
