went to an estate sale, advertising "vintage" cameras

bunch 'o junk there
but saw a clean Beseler Topcon, with leather case, 50/2 lens
very odd design

for $10, I bought it and will see how it goes

Do you mean Topcon? I have an RE Super which I bough in Japan in 1968. Still using it.
