This is THE scenic drive of Romania. Picture from this morning (click to see the larger version):

Transfagarasan (meaning: "the road across Fagaras mountains") was built by the late Romanian dictator Ceausescu in an effort to secure an alternative strategic transportation route across the Carpathian mountains in case of a Soviet invasion.

More info on wikipedia.

The road was featured in 2009 in a Top Gear segment and it is often described as one of the most spectacular roads in the world.

The road is closed from early fall to late spring due to heavy snow, potential avalanches and rock slides.

About the pic: we spent the night up there (in that cloud, at the Balea Cabin) and drove down there, in the fog (partly generated by the beautiful Balea Falls). Fantastic weekend.

Thanks Lyndee, Samuel and Rob!

Indeed, the drive can be a bit dizzying, but there are small retreats where you can park, recover from your head spinning and take shots at will (as I did). :)

An added "thrill" - as you see from the pic - is that there are no parapets for the road... if you don't drive carefully you could easily go into freefall.
