Not sure what it is, but I assume it and the many others we saw are responsible for the large holes that lead to the demise of the apple tree.

Great shot!

That's some kind of bee unless my eyes deceive me. Maybe a carpenter bee - those are notorious wood borers.
Would be helpful to see a shot of the entire insect.

It probably is a carpenter bee. A few large blond and black bees flew out. This one was slow moving. And did not leave the large hole
