This rookery is 10 minutes from the house, yet I don't go there often because the nests are close to 700 feet out in the middle of a swamp. The weather was crappy...showering and drizzly, so I figured I'd stay close to home (besides...my wife was in the recovery room at the hospital after tendon surgery in her finger and I only had an hour or so).

Before I could even see the nests, I could hear all the squabbling through the woods...

The nest in the upper right is the first one I've seen with little ones this year and the parents are rather protective...

And finally..back at home after successfully protecting his territory

There are actually about 40 pairs of Herons nesting in this rookery...all within pretty close proximity to one another.

None are in close proximity to us humans however.
