For some of the Americans, you might remember that was the way one of the insults started in a TV show "Welcome Back Kotter". I hope my mother doesn't see this, she always told me it was impolite to look up someone's nose (or down your own!). With a humpback, being that the nostrils (called blowholes) are on the roof, so to speak, it's kinda hard not to look! Each opening is the size of a basketball, and they exhale at about 300 mph. Exhale takes about 1 sec, inhale about the same. They can and do alter the shape of the holes like we can change the shape of our lips and mouth and make a sound called a trumpet, which sounds like a cross between an elephant and a Bronx cheer. The area around the blowholes is squeezed up to form a ridge which helps deflect water away from the openings.
