    I currently have a D3000 with the 18-55mm, a 55-200mm and an SB-600..

If I upgrade to the D5100, will my lenses and flash still work with it?

Isn't this basically a sideways update? (Sorry probably a little offtopic)

Not a sideways move to me but not enough of an upgrade for me to warrant spending much more $$. Maybe he has an anxious buy and a desperate seller lined up. GH

I agree, why not just put the money aside till you can go to a D7000?
  5. Perhaps because he/she's satisfied with their current stock of lenses...

What does that have to do with anything? GH
  7. Not a sideways update if one wants better high ISO. The D5100 will be about two+ stops better than the D3000. E.g. if you're comfortable shooting the D3000 at ISO 400, you'll shoot ISO 1600 on the D5100.

Of course the real question here isn't why upgrade to the D5100 or D7000 or even a used D300. It's -- what's the reason for upgrading in first place?
