urgent help for vr 300mm f2.8

hi everyone:

i just got my new toy for my d200

... af-s vr 300mm f2.8

... just trying out the combo,... can't get the vr to work
what i mean is that i do not see my target vibrating, then steadying in the viewfinder as i am about to snap a shot

settings used: vr on
switch on m/a
infinity-6m limiter
vr normal
switch is at af-on

and d200 a6 af activation is at:
shutter / af-on.... ok


any help is very greatly appreciated... want to start shooting outside tomorrow morning !

Sounds like you need to send it to me for an extended evaluation!

Was the camera powered off when you attached the lens? Have you looked wt your photos to see if they are sharp?

Do a half press on the shutter button and listen carefully. You should be able to hear the VR click on and the image will then stabilize. Take finger off the half-pressed shutter button and you'll hear it disengage. Come back and let us know the results.

.... i took some shots of nearby brickwork ... it is a gloomy, misty day today
but vr seems to work

.. with this lens the af and vr seem amazingly fast, so it's hard to take note of any operation

... one thing still puzzles me..... a couple of times , i hear a continuous whirring sound going on in the lens... for several seconds.....and then it stops
... what is this all about ??

On my 70-300 VR the whirring sound is normally the VR function. It starts when you press the shutter button half way down, then it will stop a few seconds after you release the shutter button. If you keep the shutter button half way down to focus, the VR will stay on as long as it is depressed.

wow... thx to all of you for the quick replies !

... i re-did my shots on some nearby brickwork off of my balcony
... this time i made sure i was shaking the lens , a bit on purpose
.... when i opened things up in nikon view... i got a nice surprise

... pretty good detail in the bricks, despite intentional lens shake

... so i guess the next big test will be with the birds !

... now i will attach my tc 17e and have fun

Chuck, if you're using the vr function, it diminishes your battery on the d200, so keep an extra battery if you're going out for the day and plan to engage vr all the time.

you should be able to tell looking through the viewfinder if the VR is working and how effective is it,. just look through the lens focus on distance object,. w/ VR on you should see things become less shakey
