Varsity Field Hockey

Discussion in 'Sports Photography' started by Aqualung, Sep 19, 2008.

  1. Today my daughter's FH team played their big rivals, on artificial turf. Her team isn't used to the surface, and it showed. They battled well, but lost 1-0; the other team scored towards the end of the game.

In addition, while it barely made it into the 70s today, the heat coming off the artificial surface really ruined a lot of pics w/ the heat distortion....

Here are a few, EXIF intact...switched to my 70-200 for action near the goals.

    1. I straightened for the fence posts, but maybe not?

    2. Yup, they have a boy on their team...

    6. We were this close several times today.

    8. Another close one, but no score.

    9. The last chance to score...
  2. Looking good Chris, looks as though you worked with the turf very well. I am hoping to get up to the game next friday.

    Nicely done Chris.
I shot my daughters game the other day with the D300 and Sigma 70-200 + 2.0 TC. I shot in Aperture mode for the first time and with overcast skies, found the SS kept changing and hitting below 250 resulting in blur. So,,,,,tomorrow I will switch back to the good old Manual mode.

I have noticed that a lot of posts of field hockey have these eye protection masks. I have yet to see any girl here in NJ wear one. Is it required in Mass?

Very nicely done. Every photo is technically good, but also interesting as a sports shot too.
    Well done.
  5. thanks Geoff, that'd be great!

Thanks Vince...maybe try Auto ISO? You drop from 8 to 7.5 FPS if you're got the grip loaded w/ right batts, but it's hardly noticeable.

Yes, unfortunately those "Hannibal Lecter" masks are required and really mess up the pics :frown:

    Thank you kindly Jeff...
  6. I still don't get FH but your posts certainly help.I seem to remember reading about a boy on a FH team a few years back, glad to see it can work both ways.
