VR Function

  1. I know that when using a VR lens on a tripod it is recommended to turn off the VR function. But when using a monopod it is left on. Do you think it makes a difference when the camera is in a horizontal vs. vertical position as to whether to change the VR function from normal to active?

I posed this same question to Nikon and got this answer:

Whether panning with the camera in the vertical or horizontal position, it is recommended to have VR in NORMAL. When panning, vibration in the direction of that movement is not affected.

So now I'm wondering what the "active" is really for?
  2. Active is for when you are on unstable platforms such as a moving boat, plane, or vehicle.

I think you use the 'Active' VR mode when you are taking pictures from a moving vehicle.
  4. Heck, if it's that simple, I should always use "active" when handholding! I'm about as stable as standing on a moving train!
