Last week I spent a couple more days at Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve on the south coast of England. The winter visitors had all left, but I visited the hide (blind) on the estuary at high tide to see what might turn up.

A nice little egret was first to come within range

These species are all residents, but the star was a whimbrel on passage. It posed nicely for a couple of minutes; but it was rather distant, so I had to crop these shots more than I'd like.

Nice set Alan. You must have been very excited to see that whimbrel. I sure would have been. Good shooting.

Thank you all. The whimbrel was exciting - I have never seen one in the UK before. As you can see, it landed in a perfectly lit spot, set against a rather plain background, so it reminded me of an illustration in a bird book.

Some photos of land birds to follow in a couple of days time.
