Waved Albatross--and chicks!

Discussion in 'Birds' started by jczinn, Aug 9, 2009.

  1. One of the highlights of our recent trip to the Galapagos (see my post in Wanderlust for some scenics and info... https://www.nikoncafe.com/vforums/showthread.php?t=239015) was viewing the Waved Albatross colony on Espanola Island. This is the largest nesting colony of this bird in the world, in fact where just about 100% of them breed. And, they are so unafraid of humans that in many cases you have to use a wide angle lens--you are practically stepping on them!

All taken with the D300, and 200-400VR except as noted. You are not allowed to use flash of any kind on wildlife in the Galapagos, we were lucky to have nice soft overcast for this day.

They have a huge wingspan--about 8 feet--very difficult to get them fully extended!

They are beautiful and graceful when they fly, although quite ungainly on land.
