Well here are four photos from a complete novice.

    I was out on my back deck today with my D40 and decided to snap this bird that was eating from the neighbor's yard. I guess they turned out OK? I am using a 70-300 Nikkor VR lense in Shutter Priority mode at full zoom from about 30 feet away.

    Critique if you may as I am only learning this camera and would love tips to better the shots.

    Oh they were free hand no tri-mono used....

    Nice shots
    Got some blown out highlights.
    Might try Aperature priority and some -ev adjustments for the brightness
    Practice practice practice...lolol
    Glad these are digital and not throwing money away on flim..ouch.
    Delete feels much beter...lolol I delete a bunch
    Shooting in harsh light is a no no. Unless absolutely necessary.
    Morning and later afternoon and evening give the best light
