I saw an add for a AF-S 500/4 D IF-ED in very good condition for $4,300. Is this a good price considering that it is the older version?

I would say that is a bit high. My AFSII was $5000. I have seen the AFSI for sale for around $4000. Hope this helps. It is a great lens, but just remember if anything happens to it that needs repair Nikon has no more parts for these lenes.

I believe the parts for AF-I lenses are no longer available for repairs...AF-S should still be ok to get repaired.

range of prices for the original af-s 500mm in early-mid 2008 were 3600 to 4300 on ebay, Nikonians, and here
af-i versions no longer supported by nikon

Thanks for the help. It sounds like that price is the high end of the scale. I'll wait until a better offer comes along plus I would prefer an AF-S II.

IMO, it all depends on the condition of the lens. I have found a few 500 AF-S V1s for sale for about $4500. AF-S IIs seem to go for $5000-$5500 in excellent shape. The only difference in the 2 are minimum focusing distance and weight. IQ and focus speed are the same from what I have read.
