What Is the World's Oldest Photograph?

The one referred to in the article is the oldest surviving image. There were photos that are older than that one. However, lacking a method to 'fix' them to become permanent, they were transient in nature. Within minutes or even seconds of being exposed to light outside the camera, they completely disappeared.

It's always difficult to know exactly what the first photo is, but my records indicate that the information in that article is outdated. The same photographer made two earlier surviving photos -- a photo of an etched print of a boy leading a horse made in 1825 and a photo of an engraved print of Cardinal d'Ambroce made in 1826. My sources indicate that the photo mentioned in the article was probably made in 1827, not 1826. There is also a copy of an image made in 1827 (before or after the photo mentioned in the article is unknown) of a table setting. However, the corresponding glass negative given by the photographer's family to the French Society of Photography in 1890 was lost. The photographer's letters to his brother indicate that he produced negatives as early as 1816, though none have been discovered so far.
