Does anyone know?
Resin, exuded from the twigs. This stuff is similar to that used in the Greek wine Retsina, by the way. Resin from many conifers can be quite tasty in fact.

Not only tasty...
Champlain and his crew made a tea from the needles of conifers that helped them survive their first winter in North America.
People refer to that stuff as "sap" where I come from.
