What species is this bird of prey?

Sorry for the poor image quality - i shot thru the bay window. He perched on the birdbath for several minutes.

This bird is typical of a buteo, note the "chunky" body and broad tail. Perched buteos are tough, especially if we cant see the breast. Given the location we can narrow this down to either a red tail or red-shoulder hawk. At first I thought this fits well with a red-shouldered hawk but the heavy spotting on the back looks like a JV red-tail -- BUT this is a not a western red-tail, it should be lighter. HOWEVER, Florida Red tails exhibit similar characteristics to their Western kin and are not necessarily lighter. My call is this is a JV RT, Florida sub-species, bit I'm open to further ID help on this.
