Wheelbug nymph (Arilus cristatus)

Each year, I watch for these assassin bugs around my mailbox and nearby shrubbery. This morning, there were two of these early instars (body length ~1 cm) on the mailbox. [This is a 100% crop of a handheld shot taken with the 50mm f/1.8.]

:m23: I don't recall them turning up their backsides like a scorpion. Is that a defensive posture to make themselves appear larger? :smile:
