Which Lens/Focus Method?

I have been slowly adding to my collection of equipment for a portable studio. Now my lens selection is starting to come into question. My two lenses that I am planning on using are either the 50mm 1.4 AD-D or the 17-55 2.8. I have never done a direct comparison, but I would guess that by f/4-5.6 both lenses are running neck-n-neck in terms of sharpness. The camera I am currently using is the D40x, so the 50mm does not AF.

I guess the question to start with is, when shooting people in a "studio" type enviornment, is the preffered method to use AF? Or is it best to MF?

When shooting waist up portraits, I plan on being around the 50mm focal length. Which lens, of the two listed above, would be best suited for these types of shots?
