Why thin filters?

Discussion in 'Other Cool Gear, Camera Bags, Camera Straps' started by kaige, Jul 21, 2007.

  1. I have filters that have standard thickness (depth) rings and others that
    have thin rings.
What was the purpose behind making thin ring filters and by this I mean those
that will not accept the lens cap. I would find it hard to believe it had any-
thing to do with cost of production or how light enters the lens. What
    obvious bit am I missing?

  2. Wide angle lenses and vignetting from thick filter rings!

  3. That seems quite reasonable. But it seems to be very tight math when I
think about lens hoods or guys using hats or hands to block out unwanted
    light. Thanks for helping out.

Digital Pro1 are thin, yet retain threads for hood mounting.
