Looking at purchasing a new lens for my Z5 and the two options I am looking at are:

NIKON NIKKOR Z 24-70MM F/4 S LENS FOR Z MOUNT
or

NIKON AF-S NIKKOR 24-120MM F/4 G IF ED VR ASPHERICAL AF LENS
Both of these get great reviews so I guess my question is the Z lens worth the extra cost and limited range? Currently have an f mount 70 - 300 that works pretty good on the z5 and so if I went with the 24-70 I would have good focal coverage.

Thanks

Personally, if there is a Z lens available, I would go with the Z lens, rather than adapting a F lens.
But because the roadmap has not been finished, there isn't always a comparable Z lens.

If you want more range than the 24-70/4, there is the 24-105 on the roadmap, but I have no idea when it will be released. It may be a short or long wait, for that lens. THAT is the lens that I would want, as my GP lens.

Thom Hogan, in his latest article (https://www.zsystemuser.com/nikon-z-system-news-and/the-2020-z-lens-lineup-is.html), ends with this:

Finally, we're left with what's left. By that I mean what's still on the known lens road map that hasn't appeared yet. For 2021 we should get:

18-140mm DX
24-105mm f/2.8-4 S
28mm compact
40mm compact
50mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor
100-400mm f/4-5.6 S
105mm f/2.8 Micro-Nikkor
200-600mm f/4.5-6.3?
and at least one surprise

That is a lot of lenses to release in one year.

I have both the lenses you are asking about. I much prefer the 24-70 f4 Z mount lens. The extra reach of the 24-120 f4 is nice but the image quality is no where near as good as the 24-70 f4. Good luck in your decision. Welcome to the cafe. Hope you enjoy it here.
