The same way as in Windows 7.
Right click on the task bar and click on Task Manager.
Click on the Processes tab.
Click on the App you don't want.
Click on the End task button.

I found using Win8 a much easier transition learning a few keyboard shortcuts
Task mgr can be brought up using 'Ctrl + Shift + Escape'
Or what I find easier, use the windows key and 'X' together to get all advanced settings, and pick task manager from the popup list

I am continually hitting the wrong buttons - mainly getting on the internet when I think I am getting "start". :smile:

I forgot the #1 shortcut: windows + D to toggle over the old fashioned desktop
Then if you want to go back to the metro side, just the windows key without the 'D'

Thanks for the list Richard. Wife has W8 and I'm still using W7 and everytime I have to help her it's a frustrating learning expierence for me.. This will surely help.

The easy answer - if it is a normal computer and not touchscreen - is to simply stay in the desktop all the time, where everything works the same as Windows 7. Then if you find it too slow to use the Modern interface to launch programs (other than those you have pinned to your taskbar) then install Start8 for $5 and you are back to Windows 7 (but faster and better) with no learning curve at all.

Marlene - I just noticed you don't have any applications pinned to your taskbar. Run each program you often use, and when it is running Right-click on its icon on the taskbar at the bottom and Pin it to the taskbar. Now next time you can run it with one click on the icon on the taskbar.

This came in with Windows 7, and is even more useful with Windows 8.

I agree with Richard (as usual!). Now that I have a Surface and a desktop both running Win8, and I've gotten to see just how well "Modern" works with touch input, I'm virtually never on that interface on my desktop.

Stick with the traditional desktop mode and with only a few exceptions, it'll feel like Win7.

Thanks all for the info and help. I'm getting to not mind Windows 8 at all. However, may have something to do with the 32GB of RAM that make it possible to download a couple hundred photos from the D800 in minutes instead of hours. :biggrin:
