Great “nature in action shot”! When I first started taking bird pics I thought that herons only ate fish. I was shocked when I started seeing pics of them eating frogs, rats, snakes and now other birds. Jeff

Nice shot. Never seen them do this but I'm not surprised.

For those of us who grew up with Walt Disney nature movies reality can be shocking sometimes.

Yes, have also seen this behavior in the local park.
But strange enough that birds and ducks are not aware of his intentions, they run away from a hawk or a Harrier, but they don't run away from Herons !!.

poor duck, but hey we all gotta eat, well done bud.
Felt sorry , but i was late , was driving home when i saw him holding it ,stopped and took a series till it went down his throat, !!

Maybe only some specialise in this type of hunting. Here is my catch, I went for the "macabre" look.

Oh !!almost identical scenario!!..you are right, maybe a specialist can explain this behavior, !!great capture ,West !!but i would maybe darken a bit behind the duckling ,or darken the duckling itself to make it pop !!.

One thing I noticed is that death was instant, as the Heron grabbed the duckling by it's neck and instantly broke it by shaking the bird.

Oh ,yes !!they have a very strong bite !!i have seen that with a Dove and a SANDPIPER, instant death !!
