With the addition of this new 28-300 vr. That 70-300VR is a fantastic lens for the money and when I want to use a backpack I always choose that for long over the 300/4.

I'm just curious if they will decide to drop it.

I think the new 28-300mm will be a nice lens but I don't see an 11x zoom lens beating the 70-300 VR at the longer focal lengths. And from 70mm to 150mm, the 70-300 VR is absolutely brilliant.

The 55-300mm is a nice addition for a lightweight optic and does include the more effective VR system but it won't autofocus as fast as the older zoom and lacks the instant manual focus override of the 70-300 VR. It will make for a great 2-lens DSLR kit and the soccer moms and dads will eat it up. Backpackers will probably also appreciate the new smaller lens.

I see the 55-200 VR going away but not the very successful 70-300 VR.

This name always starts a firestorm but Ken Rockwell:
The 28-300mm's MTF curves don't look so hot, suggesting that the 28-300mm's optics may suffer from the extended zoom range.

No extended zoom range lens performs all that well compared to primes or more limited zooms. No one has ever produced one that did, including Nikon.

No news here.

Heck no. I have a feeling FX is going sub-2000 to rake in all those high end DX users. Nikon now has a 16-35 F/4, 24-120 F/4 VR, 28-300 VR and the 70-300 VR. Seems like a pretty decent FX budget kit.

Love this lens on my D700, autofocus is super fast, it's sharp, and DOF is fine for the focal length of FX... Here's a quick snap I took today of my son with the combo:

Nikon will probably pull the 70-300 VR from the market, slap some nano coat on it and rebadge it as an "FX" lens and increase the price three-fold

There's nothing sub $500 that will touch it. R&D long paid for, it'll be a cash cow for them.
Be a really dumb move to discontinue it, Glenn. My 2 cents.
Agreed. Not to mention - the 28-300mm may end up being a very nice lens, but there are probably certain design compromises they have to make in developing a super-zoom like this. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think that the 70-300mm will still beat the new 28-300mm in overall optical quality. The 70-300mm VR isn't going away anytime soon. And who knows - maybe they'll come out with a 70-300mm VR II with nano-coating.

Actually, all the reviews I've been seeing of the 28-300 VR are quite good -- remember, this has been a lens that has been out in the test market since February already, so there are plenty of bloggers who have written about it.

They won't discontinue the 70-300 -- even without drawing a single comparison to the 28-300, the 70-300 is a standard lens length across all camera manufacturers to compliment the standard zooms of 24/28-70.

Nikon makes a lot of money off of this inexpensive lens -- remember last Christmas they were selling the 70-300VR nationwide for 299.99 for a couple months. Look for the same this Christmas season again. Consumers love them. Pros don't hate them.

Expect the 28-300 VR, though, to be a huge huge seller for Nikon -- it's what the consumers in particular are clamoring for -- an all-in-one wide-focal range lens that they can put on their D700's and forget, just like the many users who put the 18-200 on their DX cameras and never swap another lens. I expect that within a month of release, this lens will have the same 3-6 month waiting period that the 18-200 did when it was released.
