While in the San Francisco area we hope to spend two or three days in Yosemite NP. A friend of mine suggested getting a room in the park rather than outside because the drive in can take so long, up to an hour and a half according to her. Any advice and suggestions appreciated!

It's a long and twisty drive into Yosemite Valley from outside the park. We once stayed in Oakhurst and each day we'd have people on our bumpers wanting to go faster and faster through the curves. Then we stayed at the Curry Village and it was sooooo nice to not have to drive each day.

Stay in the valley. You will have good morning shots at sunrise, although the sun will not come up as early because of the mountains. Even if the internet says the lodging is full, if you don't have reservations, ask when you get there. We have always found a room and camp site when camping. Lodging is everything from the Ahwanee at 200+ per night, to Curry Village tent cabins. If your budget allows, have dinner one night at the Ahwanee. Love Yosemite!!!

Yosemite View Lodge is right outside of the park and is only a very short drive in. We have stayed there many times and always have found availability, even during the peak season. Fairly reasonable rates for the area! You will love your visit to the Park. Enjoy!

Thank you all for the suggestions. I'll show this thread to my wife and we'll start checking out what is available. I already see things book up fast and well in advance for the area. It must be beautiful to the point pictures hardly do it justice! :)

Sometimes hotels at certain locations become as much of the experience as the location itself. Such is the Ahwanee. The last time we stayed in Yosemite that was the only lodging we could get in the valley on short notice and we jumped at the chance. For several years before we went we had to cancel plans each summer as my wife cared for her ill mother. So, when we could finally go, we did not hesitate at the price. While there, in spring, it rained, and on top of the snow melt there was flooding and the park was closed for several days. We were "stuck" in the Ahwanee during those days and never regretted our stay. It was one of our better stays.

Definitely stay in the park, you won't regret it.

If you can't find a room, we rented a camper van from these guys for a week and it was pretty awesome. May not be your cup of tea but their camper vans have all the comforts of home.

It is run by two Australians who are super nice. They even came and picked us up.

We got one of the Hotel Sierra's with the rooftop tent.

We had quite a few people come by to see this tent. They were like. COOL!
