You Just Thought I Was Older Than Dirt - Surtsey Island, Vestmannaryar, Iceland

    Until 1963 this was open ocean, over 400 feet deep. Now it is Surtsey Island, Vestmannaryar, Iceland with an area of over one square mile.

    The eruption lasted 3.5 years.

    The softer parts are being eroded by the waves and about 1/3 of the island has disapeared:

    In a few thousand years it will probably be another sea stack like those trailing back toward Heimaey:

    No one but scientists are allowed to land there. They are researching how life takes hold on a new isolated island. There is a wonderful museum in Reykjavik with an entire floor devoted to Surtsey, well worth a visit.
