Yes, I remember. I owned a 1952 VW with the split rear window (like that one) and the flip up turn signals. We called them mox nix sticks. I was stationed in Germany in 1953 so I saw lots of these, of course none of them had a front bumper like that.

I don't remember paint jobs quite as luxurious either. :)
