The D7100 will not AF with any Nikon TC and the Nikon AFS Ii 500 f/4 lens. It will AF with any of the VR versions. This has been duplicated so far on 5 other D7100's. It will AF with that lens without the TC. I am in discussions with Nikon now. We will see what happens.

The 500mm f/4 will not autofocus with any TCs.

That's not entirely accurate. The 500/4 may not AF with the 1.7x or 2x due the maximum aperture ending up smaller than 5.6, but it will AF with the 1.4x (I've used the AFS I version with that combination on a D3 and D700 without a problem).

You are correct. You only loose 1 stop with the 1.4X.

It will not AF with the Nikon 1.4TC and 1.7TC. The same TC's and lens AF's just fine with my D300s and D300. Those TC's and the D7100 AF fine on the Nikon 500 f/4 VR lens NOT the AF-S II version.

Yes it should, it just does not with this particular combination. And this has been personally duplicated by me on 3 other D7100's. It works on the VR version of the 500mm and the Nikon 200-400VR lens.

Back a couple of weeks ago I posted this same problem. Mine would sporadically AF with all the mentioned TCs. The D7100 should AF with all those TCs, but will not on that lens. My D7100 is en route to Nikon now for the AF problem and a problem with the Fn button.
Please check your Fn button and make sure it is working like it should for the crop size setting.
I will be very interested to hear what you find out. I could find nothing after talking to 2 different people so I sent it in.

Everything else works fine for me. I will be interested in what you find, but I am going to be in touch with the Corp office. I am not going to be in any rush to send back the camera, when every D7100 I have tried has the same issue.

I'll let you know if I get any answers. Please do the same if you get anywhere. I didn't have the luxury of trying several bodies where I live. I was fortunate to get the one I did (?). I could take the TC off, take a few frames, and put it back on and it would work again .... sometimes. An old Tamron Pro 1.4X that I still have doesn't have any problems at all. I didn't send mine in until I noticed the problem with the Fn button. I could switch to 1.3X crop. But, as soon as I touched the shutter release, it would revert back. Once again, it worked as it was supposed to sporadically.

What is the age of your lens? I have several friends here with 500 f/4's, I don't think any are VR versions, I will contact them to test. Remember that there are electronics in both the lens and the camera. It may be that the lens will require a mod as well as the camera. For example, I have a 400mm f2.8 AFS-1 which reports focal lengtj correctly when used with the 1.4 and the 2.0 TC',s but not with the 1.7TC, it reports that focal length as 950mm. The lens is so old that Nikon will not rechip to work correctly with the TC.

Point being, be sure to let Nikon know lens age as well. Do you have a local store that may have a newer 500 f4, non-VR, that you could test with?

Bill, I believe Nancy and I both have the same lens. It is the AF-S II model, which is the one that came out just before the VR model. I don't recall what years they were made right off hand. The fact that mine worked for several weeks, then didn't for several days, then off and on again tells me there are other issues involved.

This is interesting. Bill I have the first version and Louie has the AFS II the one newer than mine so this will be an interesting test. It would sure make a difference for me getting the D7100.

Hector the professional photographer at the Santa Clara Ranch in Texas also has the same problem. He is a member of NPS and we are having him mention all the names of the folks that have the same issue with their Nikon issue ref number.
