Does Nikon have the horsepower to push 24mp files thru at 8fps ?
Is the D7100 the best they can do now and is that why we haven't seen a 24mp high fps DX body

I am sure they do, especially with DX, but I don't think they have the desire to make this move. This would mean introducing a DX pro body, and we know the likelihood of that happening.

who else has shown they can do this ?

Personally I think they are short on horsepower and threw the d7100 out there while they work on a bigger processor or a dualy

I can't honestly answer that, but I will say I suspect they do have the technology. The D4, while 16MP, has a decent frame rate. And if the D4s is going to be 24MPs than it surely is possible to do a what you are asking, build a DX screamer. The real question should be is Nikon ever going to introduce a DX pro body? If yes, you will get 24MP @ 10fps. My gut feeling is we will never se a DX pro body from Nikon. Just saying.

i doubt the d4s will be 24 and 24 mp dx means the sensor is around 58mps or does it, not being very technical with sensor technology I wonder what that means for the processor. I know those huge D800 files don't move to the card very fast

I think a lot of it has to do with image content and compression, if used. On my D800 I shoot 14-Bit Uncompressed + Optimal Quality on JPG. There's a lot of data in the D800 files and it changes on the amount and complexity of the color content . I personally don't think processor power is the limiting factor with the D800, I suspect buffer size. Memory is cheap these days and I think Nikon can build a screamer if they add more memory. I/O is a killer here. This means faster memory for buffer and faster and larger memory cards.

Also, it all depends on how the processing algorithms are written. I found this out the hard way pushing CNX2 as it was continually accessing the disk and bottle-necking. Put that SSD in and it is amazingly fast now. So, from a hardware perspective, I suspect they can do it.

Do you really want a DX pro body?

i would love a dx pro body but that won't happen (by pro i mean with a builtin grip).....I'd be happy with a 24mp 8fps dx body that has d300 like AF and a decent size buffer, basically all the things the d7100 doesn't have except the 24mp sensor

Yep, my definition of a pro body as well. It's too bad they didn't continue the D2x like, that was a nice camera. I don't expect Nikon to go with the specs you want in a prosumer model, the interest is surely there.:(:(:(

as soon as someone else does it they will, especially if it's Canon, IMO it's just a question of when

Regarding the write speed of the D800, I find that the buffer seldom fills up unless I've shot a looooong burst. A big factor is the speed of the media you are using. SD cards are slower than CF cards. And I've tried inexpensive, slow CF cards versus fast, expensive CF cards. You get what you pay for.

My Lexar 1000X 16 and 32 GB cards can take almost all that the D800 can throw at them.

I think that is exactly why we don't have a "D400" 24 MP is 50% more than the 16 MP of the D4, that is a considerable jump IMO.

Had Nikon introduced the D400 two or three years ago, when it should have been introduced, it probably would've had a 16-18 megapixel sensor. At this point, we should've been looking forward to a D500 announcement!

A D800S with Expeed 4 would make a lot of sense - I think that's where Nikon is going. Keep the sensor roughly the same (small refinements to noise/processing, possibly drop the antialiasing filter altogether ala the D7100). Bump up the frame rate and buffer. If they could unleash a camera that got say 5/6fps in FX/38mp mode, 7/8fps in the 25mp 1.2x crop (killer for sports), and 8/9fps in DX mode (BIF mode), it would solve problems for a lot of shooters. D700 replacement and D400 dreamers would rejoice. The D4S/Df would still have the edge in speed/workflow and style/lowlight performance, but for everyone else the camera above would make one helluva swiss army knife.

As much as I love my D800 if something like that came out I'd be sorely tested.
