All I ever hear about on this forum is posting about cameras such as the D7/100 and above. But I know there has to be some users out there who are using stuff below that camera like the D5xxx and D3xxx.

Just wondering if their really is any users of these cameras on this forum.

I had one. I have nothing but good things to say about it. If it had the higher resolution screen like the other Nikons, I doubt I would have ever upgraded.

I had one before upgrading to D7100. My camera started to experience shutter shadow on the images. I got a white strip across the image. It was not always consistent. I understood how week the AF was only after upgrading to D7100. The D3100 is atleast 4 times slower to focus in low light conditions. Besides those limitations, it was a very good camera within its limitation. Got about 15k clicks before i parted with it.

Shot with D3100 and Sigma 10-20mm.

My backup camera is the D3100. I love that little package. Nice all around camera. It has some limitations in what it can do, but let's face it a photographer with a good eye can come up with good images on any camera.

I have enlarged images from the camera to 20" x 30" and they look great!

had one.. it was nice.. sold it as the dials did not mix well with my other bodies.. so sold it.. but it took very nice images, size was great (small).. just too hard to use as a 2nd body when my fingers were looking for the dials.

matbhuvi - Those are just fantastic!!! Number 2. made me say WOW out loud. What you show is it is the user not the tool that gets stunning images. Well done. :505:

I picked up a D3200 recently as a lightweight camera to carry while vacationing, hiking, etc. I'm still learning the subtleties of the camera but have been pretty happy with it so far.

That first shot with the boat is amazing. Hell, so is the second shot! Goes to show what even the entry level Nikon DSLR's are capable of.

I've said before, if my bag and D3 ever got stolen, I'd just pick up a D5100 or D5200 with a 50mm 1.8G, and be perfectly happy with it's ability. There's really no reason to get anything more capable unless you shoot for a living.

Terrific images everyone. I have a D3100 and love it. Great little camera and far more capability than I'd ever need.

I agree with both of you. When I had a D3100, ISO 3200 was useable if I absolutely had to, but I never wanted to shoot above 800.

I think today after trying to shoot a Cross Country race, that I have convinced myself that a upgrade is in order. The AF system in this camera leaves a lot to be desired.

Try a faster focusing lens. Seriously. My D3 can't even do action shots with the 35 1.8 (Yes, that DX lens will work on full frame with heavy vignetting).

The 50 1.8G focuses about 3 times as fast. Give it a try.

They were actually shot with the Nikon 24-85 3.5-4.5G, which got the job done well at times, but fell short too. Soon as the light dropped the variable aperture really failed me.

Looks like I need some better lenses

I for on would like to see more posts like this. Over on DVXusers there is a lot of talk about the D5200 as a video camera. You can get a D5200 for about $589 used at Cameta and a D5100 is only $350, a D3200 is about $400 all are refurbished.

If I had know about Cameta before I'd have gotten a 3100/3200 instead of the EPL1 I bout about two years ago.

BTW great images in this thread.

Oh, I see. Well definitely look into the 50mm 1.8G. It's cheap, sharp, focuses very fast, has a big aperture, and works on the entry level bodies.

D3100 was my first camera, but menu diving drove me to pickup a D7000
I loved the camera though, of course used below ISO 1600 IMO
