D7100 - best Price Value going?

I've tried M43 which I liked, but it just seem a little too small for me (I shoot wildlife, landscapes, and macros mostly). I really thought long and hard about a D600 or even an 800 ( I spent about $2K on photo stuff this year).

But in the end Nikon spoiled me with the D7000. A perfectly sized camera for me, and while I still love and use my D200 it was just a little too big. I've used the D7000 since it first came out and love it as a camera. I'm a two camera shooter and knew it was time to replace the D200 because I also do a lot of video and the 7100 was getting good reviews over at DVXuser.

But I waited until I could get a refurbished D7100 for a good price ($900) & 6 mo. warrenty. For almost 7 years I was happy with the D200, until I got the 7000 to replace my D70. Size and video became real issues. After imaging two months with my D7k/D71K combo, I have to say I probably won't buy again for another 5 or 6 years.

As good as the 7000 is, the 7100 IMHO a better camera. Matched with Prosumer glass (12-24, 80-200, 300 afs f4, and the Tamron 90 macro) I've been amazed at the quality of images from the 7100. For landscapes bigger is better and I'm loving the 51 pt. focus with the 1.3 crop for wildlife.

As the pro's in the Zacuto Shootout and recently Tom Hogen said, if you can't get a good image with a current camera, you can't blame the camera. Lots of new cameras out now, but in my opinion the D7100 is still the value leader, and add some good Nikkor glass and well I really love my current stuff and it will be a while before I'm in the market for any new equipment.

I'm where I was when I had just gotten the D200 to go with my D70, and those cameras lasted me for 5 years. Given how much better the 7k/71k are, I think it will be a long time before I buy another body. If you own one and you think it the best Price Value camera going tell us why.

As much as I want the V3... I think I'm going to end up with a refurb'd D7100 next year. It's got the AF system I want and the controls I am use to.

Got me a D200 also (D50 as the backup) and am looking at the D7100 myself. Was very impressed with what I have seen. Anywhere from $918 and up for a refurb. I think all my cameras have been refurbs and have worked out quite well. Is there any info on how many shots I can expect to get using a 16 GB card? At 24 meg, I want to make sure I get a large enough card. My Sports shooting days should end this next year, then more wildlife and scenics for me.

14 bit lossless 296, 12 bit lossless 382

I went with Sandisk Extreme Pro to get the fastest buffer clearing.

I also went with 32 mb cards.

See, thats one reason I'm glad I haven't upgraded yet. I'd need 128gb SDXC cards for the lightning and timelapse requirements I have.

Zedd you could always use 12 compressed lossey or even jpg's which are killer if you set this camera up right.

But I know how you feel. I'll probably go for 2 64 mb cards soon, but that's another $200:(

But for a five or six year use that not a bad use of funds. Movies also take up a lot of card space, actually has me thinking of going with a Ninja recorder, but again that is another $1000 (with drives to record to), and then you are working with 422 codec. My machine is pretty fast, but I think I'd have to upgrade my 6 core to a 7 or 8 core machine.

But the 7100 (even the 7000) produces very nice 1080 24p stuff.

I just checked on a 32 gb SD Extreme Pro - 11.8K basic jpgs. That should be enough, you also won't have a buffer problem:)

It will only matter for just one more Baseball season, then I am done.

Randy do you still hold to the 9 focus points for Sports shooting with the D7100?

Tough question to answer since I discovered another d7100 problem and that's if several players are in motion about 10% of the time one of the other 9 sensors will steal focus so if I were to use it for sports again I would not use dynamic at all but would switch to single point. But I got a used d300 for daytime sports so I won't be using the d7100 for sports again......

Thanks. Looks like I will need some practice before season starts. Still got the D200 if need be.

Yeah, then there's the HDD space requirements. I'm gonna be hard pressed to get another body until I have kids and I really feel the limits of the AF system... not to mention I need a leather riding jack and leather riding pants... Just spent a lot of money on a new set of gloves because my hands are 100s of times more valuable that the few hundred I just spent on them.

Couldn't agree more about the D7100 being an incredible value. 51-pt autofocus, 6 fps, state-of-the-art sensor, capable of zooming to 100% during playback with a single press of a button, capable of HDR--Oh yeah, and the high-ISO capability is superb. All for $1146.

I agree with all of the above, only we can get them in Canada from brick & mortar stores for $950.00 with 2 years of Nikon warrentee. ;)

high iso is amazing, 3200 is sweet, 6400 is good
this thing kills the d300 by maybe 2 stops
