Don't worry, those of us complaining also admit the camera makes great photos.....just know and understand it's few distractions

You will probably never see the AF issues unless you shoot sports or birds.
ISO is very good to 1600 and 3200 if you don't have to crop a lot

I bought a D7100 to take to Kenya on safari last year. It didn't disappoint. I have just ordered the new 80-400 af-s (thanks to Randy & others superb shots as posted on here) Other than the big pro glass and/or a D4 / D4s I think I'm sorted for Nikon gear ( for the time being anyway !!)

Don't worry you are getting a fine camera. As Randy states in the above post, he has really only the BIF/Fast sports as an issue, for very fast work it is not as good as a D4, but 99% of the cameras in world are not. I have been successful using the 300 afs f4 and TC 1.4 using AF with only one point (the center one) shooting 12 bit. I think you will find that your macro and you 35mm 1.8 will shine on this camera for you. The 7100 is so good that I will not get another DX camera for 5 or 6 years like I did with my D200. I am so sure of that fact I bought an EP5 3 months after the 7100 and will build my m43 kit over the next couple of years. I can say that this camera deserves the best lenses you can afford. It little sings with my 12-24, 80-200, and 300. I'm sure you will love yours.

Well, I'm really looking forward to it! I've been very happy with my D60 but its age is showing. Plus I really wanted a body that had flash commander support, and for the longest time, the D90 was the lowest end body that did. And I didn't really want to upgrade to such an old model. :)

Jeff, you and I landed in about the same spot, just from different directions. I sold my last DSLR (a D700) almost 2 years ago. Bought an Oly EM-5 and a few prime lenses and got back some of the joy that had been missing. After a year and a half of m4/3 only I decided I needed to add a DSLR back into the mix and, further, that it needed to be a DX cam since most of my photographic needs were served by the m4/3 kit and I needed the DSLR for wildlife and sports. Ergo, my D7100. The Oly and the Nikon make a good team for me.

Yes, Doug its a "happy place". I love the retro feel and performance of the EP5, and the 7100 is simply amazing.

Tough question to answer since I discovered another d7100 problem and that's if several players are in motion about 10% of the time one of the other 9 sensors will steal focus so if I were to use it for sports again I would not use dynamic at all but would switch to single point. But I got a used d300 for daytime sports so I won't be using the d7100 for sports again......

Update on using afc S
If afc is set to focus only in the menus the SB will often lock
So I am back to afc d9
