Of course it had to be a lucky guess.

I just tried to think of words that ended in the right letter and that did not involve any of the other letters in my first guess. I got lucky and the word that jumped into my mind turned out to be the right one.

I think I made a mistake using CRANE recently as the first word, it failed to take account of determining the most important letters.
I have switched back to ARISE and did OK today given it is a slightly more difficult than average word.

I don't think I've ever used the same first word twice. I did try "CRANE" yesterday, and it worked out o.k. (another eagle), but I'm going to continue to use whatever pops into my head when I sit down.

Not sure I like hard mode. Quite a few times now where I'm just guessing the word from a group of possible words. It kind of shuts down the creativity in guessing strategically.

Uh......seems to me Hard mode should encourage one to think more. LOL! Being creative would seem more like guessing.

true, in a sense, but when you identify six words, for example, that can fit the criteria you're just guessing with zero thinking involved. There is some thinking when determining what word to guess next that helps solve the puzzle.

Yes, my first two word choices today were both blanks, very unusual. Crane is now a back burner starter now. But I rotate among many. 12-13 different so far.

I've been using "crank" as a third choice when trying to grab more letters, as "crane" has two vowels in it, so repeating both of those doesn't make sense, where as "crank" gets me the c, the r, the n, and the k; sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.
