D80 updates:

*
The electronic analog exposure display will be displayed in the viewfinder when the brightness of the subject exceeds the range that can be controlled by the camera, whether too bright or too dark, in the following shooting modes:
*
Shutter-priority auto (S) or Aperture-priority auto (A) exposure modes with the built-in flash up
*
Programmed auto (P) exposure mode
*
Effects of processing performed when the Long exp. NR item in the shooting menu is enabled have been improved.
*
When attempting to edit images, which had already been edited using a computer, with options in the D80’s retouch menu, the camera sometimes froze. Therefore, images that have been edited using a computer can no longer be edited using the camera.
*
Errors in English, Polish, Swedish, and Traditional Chinese menus have been corrected.

D40 updates:

*
The product will be "Certified for Windows Vista".
*
Support for the new USB Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) has been added.
*
The PTP option in the setup menu's USB item will be modified to MTP/PTP. The icon will also be modified
*
The range of possible settings for the Date option in the setup menu's World time item will be changed to 2000-2099.
*
An issue that caused the ISO auto feature to be disabled, when a two-button reset operation was performed with ISO sensitivity set to any option other than ISO 200, has been resolved.
*
When attempting to edit images, which had already been edited using a computer, with options in the D40's retouch menu, the camera sometimes froze. Therefore, images that have been edited using a computer can no longer be edited using the camera.
*
An issue that prevented accurate recording of flash output value when manual flash photography was applied with use of the Nikon Speedlight SB-400 has been resolved so that flash output value is accurately recorded.
*
Errors in English, Polish, Swedish, and Traditional Chinese menus have been corrected.
*
When white balance is fine-tuned, "+" or "?" will be displayed with the following icons:
*
White balance mode icon in the shooting information display
*
White balance mode icon in the shooting menu
*
When the mode dial is set to a Digital Vari-Program and the AF-area mode setting is changed, the AF-area mode setting will no longer revert to the default setting with the following operations:
o
The camera is turned off
o
Monitor and exposure meters turn off automatically (auto meter off)
*
The electronic analog exposure displays will flash in the viewfinder and the shooting information display when:
o
The brightness of the subject exceeds the range that can be controlled by the camera, whether too bright or too dark
o
While in P (Programmed Auto) exposure mode with the built-in flash raised.

Help!

I bought my D80 in the USA four months ago. The serial number of my camera is 6000418.

When I try to download the new firmware I get a message saying that this is not a valid US product, that it may be gray market, and can’t download.

Maybe the store that sold me the camera was not legal, but of course I had no way of knowing that at the time.

What can I do now? Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Eduardo.

I was able to complete the download from the Nikon UK site, even though I spent my money in the US. :frown:

Unfortunately Nikon did not fix the D80 Matrix Metering with this upgrade.

Well, maybe you are thinking “He bought gray market and he got what he deserved”. But, since you are a bunch of nice people you won’t say that aloud.

My friends, Romans, allow me to defend myself!

One day, during my yearly vacation, I was carelessly walking the streets of Manhattan, when in one of the many photo stores near Broadway I saw the camera I’ve being hearing a lot about: the new Nikon D80.

I entered the store and just bought it. The temptation was irresistible and my vacation days were almost over. Don’t even think about finding such a new camera in a store in Ecuador.

Now I know the camera was “gray market”. How was I supposed to tell then? Perhaps by asking the store manager if his business was legitimate? Even B&H sells USA and Imported items. Are all of them supported by Nikon? I, for once, do not know.

In summary, I am being punished by Nikon for choosing their brand and not being a distribution channel expert!

Regards,

Eduardo.

You can usually tell from the warrenty. Only official US cameras will have a US Nikon warrenty (with the extended 5 year), and grey market ones will either have a one year Nikon International warrenty (which may not even be honered by the local Nikon, I know in the UK they don't), some kind of third party MACK warrenty or no warrenty at all.

Clearly you're not at fault for buying a grey market camera when you thought it was a US one and no-one replied probably because you fixed your problem yourself!

But seeing as you aren't living in the US you can't take advantage of the extended US warrenty anyway, so I don't see any difference in buying official or grey for you?

The serial number of your camera starts with 6, US cameras start with 3. B&H does sell US and grey market cameras, but they charge different amounts and telly you what they are buying. I live in NYC and unfortunately there are a lot of stores that I would never buy from, and that includes all that I’ve ever saw on Broadway or around Times Square.

While Nikon USA won't touch your camera, you may be able to get it repaired in other countries.

This is possibly a[nother] stupid question. Do I want to update my D80firmware? I have not noticed a major deficiency anywhere and I guess there is always a risk that something goes wrong.

Advice? Are you

Why do you believe that Nikon UK don't honour Nikon International Warrenty's?

Do you have a link for this?

It's what I've heard, although I've never tried myself. They'll tell you to get the body repaired at the original country of origin.

I do believe it's only international warranties for bodies they don't honour, lenses and speedlights they do.

Thats what I believed as well (about not honouring body international warranties but honouring ones for lenses)..

But I'd heard recently that someone at Nikon UK had said that they didn't honour the international warranties on lenses and I was worried in case there was more confirmation of this.. (esp. as I will probably be buying a 70-300 from Hong Hong.. - and I live in the UK).

cheers

I keep reading this mis-information about Nikon not honouring warranty and its incorrect.

To clarify - bodies don't have an international warranty and need to return to base, unless its bonafide personal purchase while travelling, and you can produce a receipt.

Lenses with a Nikon International warrenty card will be serviced. Lenses without a Nikon warranty card or a MACK warrenty won't be serviced for free.

Anything else you read is mis-information - I've had to deal with Nikon UK service (a lot unfortunately) and the information is very straightforward. I've no idea why this internet "fact" keeps circulating - very odd.
