New D40 and D80 firmware

Can someone please either briefly explain - or point me to a suitable URL about this:
ie just what is wrong with D80 Matrix Metering, please?

Some D80 owners think that Matrix Metering is a little at the hot side of exposure (overexposes). What is almost certain is that it behaves differently than MM in the more professional bodies (D200, D2, etc). Apparently this is the new trend for Nikon more consumer oriented cameras, since MM in the D40 behaves very similar to the D80.

This is my only regret about this otherwise fine camera. I only use Center Weighted and Spot now.

There have been extensive discussions in this forum and elsewhere.
