I have a D4 and haven't seen an update in about a year. I'm not happy that they seem to have forgotten about a $6K camera in 4 years.

I tried to install the update, didn't work. I know its on the card but the camera doesn't see it. Still investigating, probably user error although I've installed various updates on several body's previously with no problem. I'm going to walk away for now and come back later and try again. I am probably missing a step and not seeing it.

Problem resolved. User error. I had put the .bin file inside the DCIM folder on the card instead of at the root level. All is well.

Could you explain what this means please?
Having just bought a D4s, I might be interested in the upgrade (not if it only does stuff I will never use) - but I have no idea what your last sentence means. My D3 bodies have had firmware upgrades, but I was lucky, Nikon did them for me when they were in for service, so I have never had to download anything (including music, because I don't know how to do that either).

Yes, I work with digital photography, but what that means is I know how to do what I know how to do, but I don't actually understand what it is I am doing, not like I understand what is going on inside my motorbike engine - I can visualise everything in that, but what is going on behind the computer butons is done completely in blind faith. I have no concept of what is actually happening.

The file structure on a Nikon dslr memory card goes Nikon D4 (or whatever camera you have) >DCIM>DSC_0000. When you download an upgrade, it's a BIN file which must be placed on the root of the card. If you were using Win Explorer, you would see "Nikon D4" before any of the subfolders and that is where the BIN file needs to be placed. The problem above was that the BIN file was placed in the DCIM subfolder and it wasn't recognized by the camera.
Instructions are on Nikon's website and it's easy enough if you follow their directions.

i'm having problems with this same upgrade, when i format the card in camera i then put into card reader when i open it there is only the DCIM folder there and if you put the cursor over it ,it says empty folder, i then copy
& paste the bin file into the window which then shows the file outside the DCIM folder,i then put card in camera go to setup menu select firmware it gives option to upgrade i then press ok ,a screen comes up saying update current 1.30 to new 1.31,i highlight yes, press ok,the next screen says updating don't switch off camera, the progress bar doesn't move at all and after about 40secs the screen dissappearers and goes back to the setup menu with no change to the firmware.I tried several cf cards with the same result.I have updated my other D4 cameras before with no problems like this.

I have only just bought the camera s/hand with 17k clicks on it but it's also showing another problem that when i connect the wt-5 to it go to the network menu and enable it no light comes on,if i put it on my D4 and enable it the green light comes on,i'm beginning to think this camera has an internal problem, any ideas out there .

Networking has to be turned off in order to do firmware updates on the D4s. Go to NETWORK in the SETUP menu and make sure that the network option is NOT enabled.
