It might make sense to wait just a bit before commiting to a D2x. .

Hi Derrel:
Thanks for the input and your thought on the body.
The reason I posted this thread is to REALLY find out what people thought. I'm not in a big rush as my D2H is working fine. But its always good to keep looking around.
The high ISO thing is a bit of a concern as I do shoot in low light all the time but my subjects are (normally) staying still so that is not as bad as I'm sure you deal with.
I have not been convinced that I want such a big file but I am looking to create more detail than I'm getting now.
I think Jim hit the nail on the head when he said 8mp would be fine. (At least I think it was Jim)
So for now I’ll keep (poking) along with the D2H and hope to hell that I don't need to crop very much.
Thanks again for your post and sorry to see that some folks need to take a pock at you because you told me what you think...

Hi Doug,
I have read all the "stuff" and looked at all the D2X images... Granted there are some great ones and tones look great.

I still have the D100.. I would not buy, I don't think even if I had the money,
a D2X, after following everythig on it.

Not willing to handle 12 meg files. I really think thats a tad over kill. 8- highest 10....

Really don't want 10 either. 8 would be ok.

I am curious to the next Nikon offering. I would wait.

I shoot, unfortunately, wildlife and have a prob with high fps on the D100. D2h (s) would prob suit me better. 4 megs a tad to low. But really a great camera. I really like action stuff.

Agree right now the D2X does not quite meet your shooting style...

Me, well I would never really need it.
I have been trying to think of ways to get away from shooting birdies, just can't do it...lol
Someone says wanna go shootin birdies and darn there I go.

I would love to have your vision and style. I just don't have the vision or a style.

Just dropped by really to say after looking at all the replys and yours, I think your making a good decision for now.

cheers

I concur with Gale’s comment. I plan on stepping up from my D70 but the D2X is over kill for me, and I can’t see spending $3,500 for a D2Hs when for another $1500 you can get the top of the line DX2. My most favorite thing to do in the Nikon Cafe is to guess what Nikon camera was use for the particular shot posted and to my surprise I’ve seen a lot of crappy D2X shots posted that I thought were a D70 and Some D70/D2H that I though were D2X, granted these are only 72 dpi images. Please don’t get me wrong I know the D2X is a superior camera and I’ve seen some superior shots. My upgrade will be the D200.

Re: D2H @4MP Being "Too Low"

I've owned both a D2H and a D2X and I've got to tell you....if you don't need to do lots of cropping and are only printing to 13" x 19", there isn't much you can't do with a D2H (it focuses and tracks better) or a D2Hs (far better at higher ISO but with the same less than perfect focus algorithms) than a D2X.

As I've started shooting more little birds...I feel the need for an X. Otherwise, I'd definitely prefer the 4MP D2 bodies. I'm still not convinced that I may go back to that route.

Thanks Jim:

As you know, I’ve been shooting the 2H for a while now and I really do like it. My only issue is when I need to crop I've got no room to move.
If I could just get a little bigger sensor in this body I’d be way to the races.

Thanks again for your insight....

Doug, the proof is in the details

As you know I primarily shoot motorsports. Switching from the H to the X here are some of my observations:

The X files appear to hold highlight detail better.
The H is better at 640 and above ISO but still not what I'd like it to be

The real difference is in the details. While many here can say they make "stunning" prints off a D2H at 13x19 or even 16x20, until they make the same print with an X and an H it's hard to quantify the difference.

I made "stunning" 16x20 prints all the time off my D2H. Race cars have generally sharp edges and clean lines so it's easy to interpolate and still get a quality print. Where the prints lacked were the small contingency sponsor decals on the side of the car. You could see the colors and identify what they were but they usually weren't clear.

With the D2x, the decals are much more legible. The bottom line is that in the fine details at larger print sizes (or where you have to crop) the megapixels do matter and make a noticeable difference.

I'll look for some examples later and post them.

Good luck!

I have to agree with david.
the d2h is a fantastic camera, but as it comes to detail the d2x is a real killer.
I have had the d2x and the d2hs for a few weeks and decided to stick with the d2x. I have sold my d2hs last week. My feeling is ; you can't work with two different camera's. Although the body's are the same, the charateristics are different.
yes the d2hs is better in high iso, no question. BUT it doesn't give you more detail compaired with the d2h . I also have the feeling that the d2x af is not as good as the d2h. I can't find out how, but it just is.
I have seen stunning "sports"results with the d2x, but my feeling is that the d2x is NOT a sportscamera but a camera for "normal" shooting when there is a demand for fine details.

Doug, dont you have the possibility for renting a d2x for a week ??

Just my 2 cents

Alex:
Thanks for the info...
My dealer is sending me a D2X to try for a few days... If I don't like it I can just send it back to him.
So i'll give it a go and see.
Thanks again

I haven't read all the responses but all I can say is that the "support equipment" you'll need must be taken into account if you go to the X. I started out with a D100, 35-70 2.8, 24-85, 80-200 f2.8, 60mm micro, Mac G4 and Apple 17 inch display.

When I bought the X I discovered that my glass was holding me back so I dropped a small fortune on new lenses... 17-35, 28-70, 70-200VR. Then I found out that my computer wasn't quite cutting it with the 350MB files that I was trying to process and when touching things up at 100% I could only see a very small portion of my image so I had to spring for a G5 and 23 inch Apple display.

If I were you, I'd hang on until the D200 is released... unless of course you have the green to drop to get everything the camera has to offer.
