Dear Robert,

The idea for now is still the same - weak channels are more prone to noise from all the sources, including interference from AF/VR. On a side note, why AF each frame for panorama? That's a risk..

Dear James,

Is this whjat you see?

Hi Iliah,

I used AFS on all frames because it was cold outside and I didnt want to have to worry about nudging and changing the focus while panning. I have seen light banding on some of my other night images during the past 2 weeks but never to the extreme levels (throughout an entire image) found in frame 2.

I am not going to worry about it, sooner or later nikon will have to address this problem.

Just wanted to thank you for your scientific analysis and best wishes.

Hi Iliah,

Yes at 100% the file looks fine but zoom in at 200% and some banding is visible. Does that make sense, can you see it?

Many Thanks

Heres my 200% crop, but on the forum its difficult to see, banding on this image seems to be small. Did you see it in the NEF?

I suspect many folks use "Auto Contrast". That may make banding more nasty. Also "Auto Contrast" negativly affects colour reproduction, at least on D2X with skin tones in low key portraits.
Iliah :

I'm assuming that this "Auto Contrast" is related to the Customise Settings in the Optimise Image menu, specifically Tone Compensation. That defaults in the "Normal" default for the camera to an Auto setting in Tone Compensation (I think - this is based on the defaults for the Customise, as one can't access the "Normal" settings for Optimise Image).

That's a very subtle setting, buried as it is under several sub-menus. And what's even more suble is that all of the other settings in Custom for the Optimise Image sub-menu are "normal", i.e., no flexible/auto compensation by the camera. Tone Compensation (on my camera body at least) was the only one with a default "Auto" setting.

That's a tricky item to find without knowing about it.

I'll reset my my D200 and see how this changes matters.

P.S. I saw a note over in the "other forum" about another viewer called IRIS (Iris Link in DPR).
